‘Glasses of the Future’ competition launches to help kids get the right glasses to boost grades and life chances

Ahead ofWorld Sight Dayon 10th October, theInternational Agency for the Prevention of Blindness(IAPB) puts children at the forefront with the launch of theGlasses of the Future competitionto creatively encourage children, parents and teachers to think about the importance of childrenֱ eye health.

Context:

World Sight Day is an annual awareness day, spotlighting preventable blindness and vision impairment. Devastating research into childrenֱ eye health has shown us that:

  • Globally, at least 450 million children have a sight condition that needs treatment
  • 90 million children are living with some form of sight loss
  • 40% of childhood blindness is preventable or treatable
Age categories:
  • 5 and under: A glasses template is provided on thewebsiteto be downloaded and printed out for children to colour in and put their own designs on.
  • 6-12: This category will design their own freeform glasses. An example is available on thewebsite.
Prizes:
  • Win up to ₹67,000 for their school
  • See their glasses brought to life
  • Take part in media interviews in conjunction with their school

Later in the year, there will be an opportunity to gain access to new research that highlights the extent to which correcting refractive error impacts a childֱ academic performance and future lifetime income.
