Men are three times more likely to undergo kidney transplant: Data from Apollo Bangalore

  • The data also reveals that 90% of the donors are women
  • Majority of the transplant recipients falls in the age category of 20-44 years

Bangalore, 13ÌıMarch 2025: On this World Kidney Day, healthcare expert at Apollo Bangalore reveal that 75% of kidney transplants recipients are men, whereas 90% of the donors are women. By considering the rise in chronic kidney diseases, they emphasized the crucial role of early detection in preventing the same. The theme for this year,Ìı‘Detect Early and Protect Kidney Health’Ìıunderscores the importance of timely screenings and interventions, as most kidney diseases remain asymptomatic in their early stages and become evident only in advanced phases.

As per,ÌıDr. Naveen M Nayak, leading Nephrology Specialist at Apollo Hospitals,ÌıSheshadripuramÌı“The leading causes of kidney disease in India include diabetes, hypertension, and obesity. Advanced technologies and treatments have proven beneficial in managing these conditions. Early detection through routine screenings such as proteinuria tests and creatinine level assessments allows doctors to diagnose and intervene before the disease progresses. Diagnostic tools like imaging and renal biopsy pinpoints the exact cause and tailor treatments accordingly helping in significantly delaying or even preventing the onset of End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)â€.

Apollo Hospital in Sheshadripuram performs approximately 1,100 dialysis sessions per month, with ABO-incompatible and swap transplants making up around 10% of total procedures. Over the past year, it has successfully performed around 40 renal transplants, with zero cases reported on immediate complications like vascular thrombosis or bleeding. It has carried out successful transplants with most recipients falling within the 20-44 age group. With advancements in transplantation techniques, patient survival rates stand at an impressive 90%.

While talking about the need for adoption of medical tech, Dr. Naveen NayakÌısaid thatÌı“Technological advancements are playing a crucial role in the early diagnosis and effective treatment of kidney diseases. For instance, if detected early, robotic assisted surgery technology helps in significantly improving precision and success rates in detecting kidney issues, particularly cancers and tumours. We have been noticing that these innovations have led to notable reduction in radical nephrectomies (complete removal of the affected kidney), enhancing the retention of kidney function, speeding up recovery times, and minimizing the need for dialysis in future, all while boosting patientº£½ÇÖ±²¥ quality of life after treatment. As this yearº£½ÇÖ±²¥ World Kidney Day theme highlights the importance of early detection, cutting-edge technology will be instrumental in transforming kidney care and enhancing patient outcomesâ€.
